Cognitive Craftmanship

Semester: M.1.2

Project: M1.2 Research Project

In this research project, I explored how the manipulation of physical objects can support the development and representation of thoughts. Inspired by Andersen’s Magic Machines workshops [5][6], I invited participants to give shape to their thoughts and feelings using a variety of crafting supplies.

The findings suggested that expressing thoughts and feelings through hands-on making not only helps individuals better understand their own experiences but also enhances understanding for those observing or listening.

Some of the clay sculptures created in response to the prompt: ‘How do you see the other person regarding their professional identity?‘.

My development

During this project, I had the opportunity to work with the original designer of the Magic Machines workshop as my coach. I further developed my understanding and skills in the expertise areas of Creativity & Aesthetics (C&A) and Technology & Realisation (T&R) by designing and executing my own design research using their method. They taught me that aesthetics go beyond visual beauty: they are a medium of communication. Form, material, and interaction all convey meaning. In terms of development in the area of User & Society (U&S), I conducted research on the importance of understanding and sharing thoughts and feelings. I realised how vital this is to me personally, as sharing my own thoughts and feelings within my community is very important for my wellbeing. This experience helped sharpen my vision: I want to design to strengthen communities, enabling people to build supportive networks grounded in empathy and validation.
